Daytrip to Otranto to explore the east coast of Salento. Lunch at fish restaurant La Bella Otranto on the quay, perfect location with a cooling breeze and a view of the bay.
In the afternoon we drove along the beautiful coastal road to Terme Santa Cesarea.
We ended up by chance at Piscina Solfurea, because that super turquoise swimming pool with green-white striped parasols looked so fascinating from above. In the bathhouse, health and well-being meet against the beauty of the sea and the tranquility of unspoilt nature. Built into the stony cliff of the Adriatic coast, the solphurous pool with italian sunbeds is the ideal location for a refreshing dip in the sea, easily accessible thanks to a staircase carved into the rock. The sulphurous water with a temperature of 26° C, coming from the Fetida cave and we were told it improves blood circulation, relieves pain and has an anti-inflammatory effect. I thought the water smelled so bad that I didn't venture into the pool but Henk did and I took the steps to the sea.
Since Roman times, the therapeutic properties of water and mud have been exploited, for which the first structure in the modern age was built at the end of the 19th century, in Moorish style, with the name of Villa Sticchi. An amazing fairytale palace that was unfortunately not open due to renovation.
In the magical light at the end of the day we drove home to Matino. Che bella giornata!
